La Fornace di Asolo is a classic example of old industrial works and «an interesting chapter of history regarding local work» which Confartigianato Asolo (district craftsmen’s association) has saved from abandonment and dereliction. Lying at the foot of the encircling Asolo hills, it testifies to past local activity and today’s wish to renew it in modern forms in keeping with the times. The renovation of an "industrial archaeological" building confirms man’s almost inevitable need not only to re-establish contacts and continuity with his history, but also to rediscover and fully appreciate the traces of his identity in terms of local community. On the other hand it is clear that problems tied to the setting up, development, abandonment and lastly the recovery of industrial areas are undoubtedly linked to the vicissitudes of the surrounding district and to the ensuing complex series of interconnections, forming an indissoluble bond between society, culture, economy, tradition and innovation. Aware of all this, the restoration paid particular attention to certain values: originality of the architectural language, avoiding any blot on the landscape, dialectic relations between restoration and new building, symbolic value of the shapes and details, aesthetic and functional quality of the designed spaces. These values from an architectural viewpoint can be fully appreciated in the words of the architect Radames Zaramella "...the guiding thread is intended to be respect for the region, the attempt not to change its continuity, to leave the backgrounds of fields and woods that together with the land under cultivation draw the rapt gaze up to the enchanting historic centre of Asolo,...this design shows how the renovation of a historic structure and its environs can be reconciled with an intervention that is not just conservative but also interpretative, that holds fast to the past yet at the same time offers new representational values in which to appear". Thanks to a masterly and well-calibrated intervention the brickworks has regained its original vitality and, not unmindful of the history that lies behind it and is imbued in it, intends being a catalyzing force of ideas this time looking to the future. » Visit the Image gallery |
