Cos'è un incubatore

Business incubators are organizations that accelerate and systemize the creation process of innovative businesses. The incubators offer opportunities for professional growth to new entrepreneurs and for contact with other firms in the region through the use of common infrastructures and the provision of specific services to support the business.

There are basically three models of incubators:
. non-profit incubators
. for-profit incubators
. university incubators
Non-profit incubators are structures that are often of public origin and do not seek profit but set themselves macroeconomic or social objectives, e.g.: redeployment of production, spreading of innovation, increased employment. This model is widespread in Europe and Italy.

For-profit incubators are almost always privately-owned structures having as their objective the creation of profit, normally participating in the venture capital or seed money of new companies. This model is widespread mainly in the United States and Great Britain.

University incubators are created within university structures and support research spin-offs coming from students, graduates, researchers and teachers. They may rely on public or private capital.

In America Business Incubators have created 19,000 currently active companies, the success rate of which is 87% (source: National Business Association). In Europe incubators create approximately 4,500 new firms and 29,000 jobs net a year (source: UE - DG Enterprise / CSES). The success rate of the incubated businesses is 95% (source: AIFI 2002)
